This poem is thought to be written about Yeats love for Maude Gonne because the poem is written about a man talking to a woman about when she is old and has grey hair and is no longer full of life, she will still be loved because of who she is on the inside. It states that many men have loved her beauty whether if they truly loved her for who she was is unknown. But Yeats loved her whole soul not just her beauty. He loved everything about her and would love her for whatever she looked like. He hopes that when she is old, she would realize the mistakes she made in not loving him and hope that she would regret this for the rest of her life.
